Nu.Folk.
Sawtooth and Salt Jugs.
I’ve been in the swing of show season and introducing myself around New York. (Hello to all my new additions, thanks for being here)
A little house keeping up front: I’ll be at Basilica Farm and Flea Spring this weekend! It’s a beautiful venue on the Hudson that will have 100+ makers, food, flora, and more.
Okay on to the art!
I had the pleasure of shooting my latest collection of wearables this past month in our friend’s garden right before the big bloom. My models arrived toting baskets of clogs and we set up simple wooden chairs by the chicken coop. It smelled like magnolia blooms and fresh earth. I was snapping away on my favorite film camera and got some truly sweet shots.
Nu.Folk is a collection of bold symbols placed with intention, quilt inspired with sawtooth painted knees. Painterly characters that reference old salt glazed jugs, the classic blue always catches my eye when I’m antiquing.
(hot take: thrifting has the same feeling as foraging. Eyes scanning, brain locked in on that one linen shirt in a rack of 60)
I digress. It’s been a swirly month.
I think what I love about this collection is the (relative) simplicity. There’s a quote from Brancusi, “Simplicity is complexity resolved.”
I often desire the complexity, getting into the tiny marks that make the whole. Relishing the slowdown that the work of creating takes but knowing theres a place for each and when to say it’s finished.
These doodled shirts are so fun to create, the pastels make you work with large marks, smudging the colors together, bold lines and quick choices.
Little houses, carrots, a cat, pinwheels! why not!
I have more to share but my clock is ticking down and I’ve got to pack up for the show! As always feel free to reach out about reclaiming your closet. Natural fiber dyeing, printing, or painting by mail or drop off in Kingston NY.
One last treat.
This past weekend I was out at Lyndhurst castle for a market, it’s a beautiful space and I have to make a trip back just for the trees. During the weekend I got to share some larger tapestry painting I’ve been trialing and she found a new home.
If you would like a larger scale work feel free to reach out.
Take care, give a tulip to your loved one, enjoy any and all breaks in the rain.
Moth.
